Life is not without tribulation and trials; we will all face difficult and painful circumstances. These situations can come in many forms; death of loved ones, heartbreak from broken relationships, financial and living crises, illnesses, etc. can hit us out of nowhere and leave us feeling afraid, broken, and alone. No matter what situation we may find ourselves in, we can rest in these 3 promises of God for us.

3 Promises of God in Your Brokenness

1. He Will Never Leave You

  • “The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” – Deuteronomy 31:8
  • “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9
  • “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18

You’re Never Alone

We are never truly alone, even though there are times that we may feel like we are. The reality is that God is with us wherever we go; He has promised to never leave us or abandon us. At some point or another, I’m sure we have all had someone in our lives that promised to never leave us and they broke that promise. Humans are fallible, but the beautiful thing is that God is not. The Lord is not a promise breaker! His name is Faithful and True (Revelation 19:11). He is called the Wonderful Counselor, the Prince of Peace. We can rest assured that He will stick to His Word and keep His promises to us. He never gives up on us, He never fails us, and He will never let go.

  • “For a child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.” – Isaiah 9:6

Come to Him

  • “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30
  • “Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7

We can boldly come to Him and cast (ie. throw or hurl) our worries on Him. He is never too busy to hear our prayers, He is always listening. Jesus was well acquainted with grief (Isaiah 53:3); He was described as a man of sorrows. He sympathizes with our weaknesses and pain (Hebrews 4:15-16). He beckons those that are hurting, those who are tired and worn down from life, to come to Him. He says He will give us rest for our souls. Indeed, true peace, even in the most tragic of situations, comes from His Holy Spirit. Sometimes, we just have to get down and pour it all out to God. We can confidently lay out everything that’s bothering us, just like we would with a good friend. We can tell Him how we’re feeling, our fears, our worries, our concerns, and He will patiently listen to it all. The best thing is that He wholeheartedly cares. The God of the entire universe loves us so much and cares about every little detail in our lives! He is faithful to listen and faithful to comfort you and give you His peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

2. His Grace is Sufficient

  • “But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” – 2 Corinthians 12:10
  • “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” – Psalm 73:26
  • “I have said these things to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33

We are weak, but He is strong. Our flesh and hearts may fail us, but He is our strength. He is our anchor and our refuge in the storms of life. He is not surprised at our circumstances; they do not waiver or shake Him. Nothing is too hard for Him to handle.

  • “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble, and He knows those who take refuge in Him.” – Nahum 1:7
  • “‘Ah, Lord God! It is You who have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for You.” – Jeremiah 32:17

3. He Works All Things for the Good

  • “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” – Romans 8:28
  • “The Lord is faithful in all His words and kind in all His works. The Lord upholds all who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down.” – Psalm 145:13-14

There is a quote I read once that said even a “no” from God is covered in love and kindness. This is so true! God loves us more than we could ever fathom, we are His children. We can trust that He will use everything in our lives, including the bad and the ugly, for the greater good. He often uses pain and difficulty to better us and bring about new growth in our lives. He is a God that creates beauty from ashes; He makes all things new! As much as pain sucks- the growth, strength, wisdom, and newfound closeness to God that it can bring is absolutely invaluable.

  • “Be strong in the Lord and the strength of His might.” – Ephesians 6:10

  • “Even to your old age I am He, and even to gray hairs, I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry, and I will deliver you.” – Isaiah 46:4
