As daughters of the King in a world that is rampant with sin, it can be hard sometimes to stay holy for God. Much of what the world says is okay and good these days is against God and what He wants for us. I want to share with you ladies 4 main things I have learned about being a godly woman, mostly based on the famous 31st Proverb; plus 17 Bible verses to encourage and strengthen you in your growth as a woman of God.
4 Characteristics of a Godly Woman
1. Adornment of Good Works
“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves.” – 1 Peter 3:3-5
This is not to say that doing your hair, wearing nice clothes or jewelry is a sin (read more about that here), rather Peter is saying that our beauty shouldn’t be primarily on our outer appearance. We should focus more on our hearts and living for Christ than our outer beauty. True beauty really does come from within. A godly woman will strive to live for God, rather than being more concerned with her outer appearance. In other words, her physical appearance doesn’t take priority over her heart or living for the Lord. A gentle, kind, and tranquil spirit is beautiful and precious in God’s eyes. Outer beauty will eventually fade, but a woman who fears the Lord shall be praised.
- “Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.” – Proverbs 31:30
2. Wisdom and Kindness
“Strength and honor are her clothing; she shall rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness.” – Proverbs 31:25-26
A godly woman is not a bully. She doesn’t criticize and tear others down; she is kind and builds others up. She carries herself with strength and honor that comes from a reverence of God and an awareness of her worth- she is a daughter of the King! She trusts in God to take care of her and lead her.
- “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” – Proverbs 1:7
3. Good Work Ethic
“She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness.” – Proverbs 31:27
A woman of godly character looks after her household. She works hard, and she is efficient in her work. The Bible tells us that whatever we do, we should do it with all our might and do our work as unto the Lord. Now I know this isn’t always super easy, but I have found that really trying to do my work (even chores!) as if I am doing them for the Lord really does make it easier and honestly more enjoyable.
- “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” – Ecclesiastes 9:10
- “She seeks wool and flax, and willingly works with her hands. She is like the merchant ships, she brings her food from afar. She also rises while it is yet night, and provides food for her household, and a portion for her maidservants. She considers a field and buys it; from her profits she plants a vineyard. She girds herself with strength, and strengthens her arms. She perceives that her merchandise is good, and her lamp does not go out by night. She stretches out her hands to the distaff, and her hand holds the spindle.” – Proverbs 31:13-19
4. Modesty Modesty Modesty
This is one that I really can’t stress enough. Modesty is so important sisters! (Read more about modesty here.) A godly woman is modest and respectable in apparel. You will not find her in ultra revealing shorts, shirts, skirts, or dresses. A modest woman is a very respectable woman, and very attractive despite what the world might say. And let me just say that yes- men might gawk at a woman who is dressed in sexy attire, but trust me sisters, men (and I mean good men- the men worth marrying) want a woman who does not show what she’s got to the whole world. A godly man will want a woman who respects herself and dresses modestly.
As a girl who used to go along with the trends of the world (aka crop tops and short shorts, skirts, etc.), I have learned a lot. Society has normalized provocative clothing, but don’t be deceived sister. Modesty is so beautiful! Don’t let the world tell you otherwise. Let’s dress like children of God that we are. When we dress provocatively, it can really send the wrong message. We can still be trendy, cute, and classy without being super revealing!
- “In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.” – 1 Timothy 2:9-10

1 Peter 3:3-4

“Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman without discretion.”
1 Peter 5:5-6

1 Thessalonians 4:2-10
“For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you.”
1 Timothy 4:12
“Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.”

“But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
“Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord!”
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.”
1 Corinthians 16:14
“Let all that you do be done in love.”
